chaumont poster festival

This is my entry for the Festival international de l’affiche et du graphisme de Chaumont, a poster festival happening yearly which also features a student competition. The brief is "Graphic Design in public space: an active form" and it asks to explore graphic design mode of action and its ability to mediate and disseminate messages, signs, symbols and images in public.

The idea Alex, Jamie, Joe and I shaped references to the different forms graphic design can assume: essentaly printed media and screen media. The difference between the categories becomes particularly relevant when it comes to ownership and reproduction of a given image. On screen something can be easily reproduced (copy and paste or CMD+C and CMD+V) and an idea can be stolen, while on print it is way harder to reproduce exactly the same image and by taking i.e. a poster one only takes a piece of paper, not an idea. I referenced to both of these 'worlds' or languages by highlighting its contrast in my poster.

This is not the poster we used to enter the competition; the one we designed pushes the same idea but in a different, more abstract and clever way; here it is, screen-printed in two colours.

The video is the first of a series curated by second year graphic design students at the University of East London. The series is a sort of archive/database students can add on to and it collects different experiences from different people. Overall, it investigates the different approaches that various institutions, universities, art museums, design studios etc, have towards contemporary art and the design world, the narrative of their spaces, what they do and how.

This one takes into account the collezionemaramotti and was done by Jamie and I. It is an interview with Marina Dacci, director of the Collezione, a once private contemporary art collection owned by the founder of MaxMara, Achille Maramotti.

zeitgeist

With the help of Google Zeitgeist and Public Data I designed this poster.
It shows the six most popular online searches in 2011 in six different countries in comparison with their standard of living. Such standards are indicated by the number of PC owners as well as by the GDP per capita.

Interestingly, the richer the country, the dumber its interests are.

A project I have worked on with Manuel in the last couple of days.It is an infogram representing the content of the book 'Cuts' - a collection of texts and photographs on different topics dating from 1958 to 2004.

The main diagram it's a visual account of the contents. Screenprinted in two colours.

The Theatre of the Absurd is a genre from the mid 20th century that casts away the traditional rules and values of theatrical structure. We focused on Samuel Beckett’s ‘Waiting for Godot’ as it encapsulates the essence of the genre. To strenghten its absurdity we performed a scene from the first act in a state of intoxication (we drank a lot) to the best of our ability.
We recorded the audio and then made this video using an overhead projector. Everyone in class was given a small handout with the description of what we did and the scene from the play we performed.

mistakes zine

A zine about everyday mistakes and distractions, designed with Alex,
Joe, Charlotte, Jamie and Matthew. The format of this one is massive: 420mm*594mm, A2 size. When opened it is almost 1 meter wide.

My entry is the second one. It is about the usage of my computer during a working day. By tracking my mouse while working and saving an image of the generated image every hour, I managed to have a visual account of what I do during a normal day: work (not much) and distractions (a lot).

I had to create and sell an object: I created a double side flip-book. When flicked it shows the riverside of the Thames in central London (Canary Wharf–London Eye on one side and the coming back on the other side).

The brief was to create an identity for a music label and then make twelve cd covers for twelve different releases. I used three different shapes for the three different musical genre, each of which is also "defined" by two adjectives placed over the name of the artist and spelled using the phonetic transcription—we are dealing with sound here. On the back of the sleeve there is the definition of such adjectives. I will letterpress these in Italy during the Christmas Break.

I had to create an invite for a fictional event. I thought about a restaurant opening night; the invite would have a piece of puzzle inside which you can take out and then bring along on the opening night. Only forty pieces of puzzle therefore only forty person would be invited. The puzzle put together is the logo of the actual restaurant. On the back of the invite a QR barcode can be found; when scanned, it will bring you to a blog with all the directions.

I had to somehow visualise this poem. I made it readable with a sense that we wouldn't normally use when reading or hearing a poem so I made it "touchable": every highlighted world on the left page is somehow represented on the right page.

Surprised by the desolation of central London on probably one of the busiest day of the year I decided to take some pictures with my camera.
The desolation of such a busy place like EC1 alyways is, the lack of people
as only birds can be seen in the pictures, the little details suggesting it's the Royal Wedding day together with the overall idea of something happening very far away - achieved with the constant representation of
an endless route, can be found in the pictures.

Five 16"x12" prints, photo satin paper, black framing, mounted on 5mm foam cardboards.

supersonic lovers music video

Done! That's the music video for our dream project 25. We decided to use this very nice DWDK forthcoming 12" relase, by SuperSonic Lovers.

The robotic feeling we sensed while listening to it gave us this simple but nice idea: we could build a cheap robot made out of boxes (Jamie) which would 'walk' to most of London's hotspots, following a girl and trying to catch her and 'reach her soul' (which is represented here by Tanya). We only had three days: one for brainstorming and planning, one for shooting, and one for editing. So, this is it. Very cheap and DIY feelings, but still nice. Enjoy!

This is my high concept band for the project 'Anarchy in the UK'. My band would be a jazz trio made up of french homeless people. They are playing jazz in the suburbs of Paris, wearing rat masks - in order to emphasize this idea of suburban, wet and dirty parisian slums in which they perform.

We had to design the cover art for the 12-inch, the 7-inch, the cassette and an A2 poster.

Today I finished the second part of project 4. This is my cover design for the book I read, a very nice book, The Magus by John Fowles. The novel is centred on Nihcolas Urfe, an English teacher who finds himself embroiled in psychological illusions of Conchis, a master trickster. As time goes by these sinster illusions become increasingly dark.

I decided to use a very simple layout and design, almost a childish kind of design, because I think it really suits this kind of novel. I read a great book about cover art and design for books and found a lot of insipiration. This particular cover design style for books was first utilized by Matt Lee in his work called "Jeff Death".

Well, the project is almost finished. I have all the picture and I am putting them on an A1 as the brief required, in order to make a double page spread. It's almost finished because I am still waiting the pictures of my japanese partner recieving my pack! Her name is Sari and she is studying Graphic Design in the Joshibi University of Art and Design. However, this is the PDF I made using the photographs of both the "art packs", already labelled in A1 format, almost ready to be printed.

the 100 club

This is my idea for project 17. When I was in London I didn't have a camera, so I have been waiting to reach Italy during the Christmas break to photograph the 100 different examples of the same object, as the brief required.

I went back home and started thinking about what to take pictures of. I wanted to do it with 100 different pairs of feet but finding 100 people disposed to be photographed would have been too hard. I thought about 100 hands... Then one morning I saw my 5 years old brother playing with some of his dinosaur toys and a strange idea came to my mind: he really likes dinosaurs and has a lot of games and toys of that kind. So I decided to count out all of his dino toys and, yes, they were almost one hundred!

I took the pictures and, following the instruction of the second part of the brief, I let the subject matter of the photos "influence the design of my layout", producing the footprint of a T-Rex (my brother's favourite!) as layout for the 100 pictures. They are all different dinosaur toys with wonderful colours and shape and made with different materials. I am now a Member of 100 Club.

This was a one day project. The first part was to write an essay about us, our psych, how we think, perceive and understand the world around us, while the second part was to produce some work about our own essay.
I decided to make a short video highlighting the most important words from my essay. Audio, colours and 'flow' of the worlds are related - I used VDMX, a vjing program, to make it. The music track is "Without End" by Scanner, a London-based electronic music producer.
